New Metropolitan in Spain marries design and durability
Metropolitan has just launched a 6,000sq m (64,500sq ft) club in Badalona, Spain – its first in the city.
A €5m (US$5.6m, £4m) development, the club follows the philosophy of the rest of the Metropolitan estate, marrying good design and high quality, with an emphasis on both relaxation and training.
Located in the city centre, the club has been converted from an old multiplex cinema, which started out as theatre in 1911. The structure of the building has been kept intact, but the inside totally renovated in an 18-month project.
The club’s architect, Joan Carles Navarro of Aia Estudio, was mindful of the high standard of design of Metropolitan clubs: previous sites have been designed by prestigious architects including Richard Rogers.
Facilities at the new club include three indoor studios – one for cycling and two for group exercise, offering 900 classes each month – and a functional training zone.
The Technogym-equipped gym has more than 100 machines, including Technogym’s Artis line; the MyWellness cloud-based fitness tracking system is also on offer.
Other facilities include a spectacular wet area, the focus of which is the 23m indoor pool, which is visible throughout the club. There’s also a solarium, Turkish bath, sauna, spa pool, ice fountain and cold showers.
A relaxation area comprises six treatment rooms with a range of beauty treatments on offer, as well as physiotherapy and nutritional services.
Members also have access to luxurious changing rooms, a cafeteria, sun terrace and a crèche.
With 23 clubs in major Spanish cities, the Metropolitan chain currently has 70,000 members. It now plans to open two to three more clubs each year, with an overall target of 35 clubs operational by 2020.
