Youth players to benefit from Atlanta United’s new US$60m training complex

by Matthew Campelli | 20 Apr 2016

Atlanta United FC – the football franchise joining Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2017 – has revealed plans for a new US$60m (£41.7m, €52.8m) training facility which emphasises youth development.

Designed by local architects TVS Design, the centre will be home to the club’s youth academy, first team players and staff. The 33-acre site will include a 30,000sq ft (2,787sq m) headquarters and six playing fields.

Darren Eales, president of the football club, said that youth would “play a critical role on the development of the club”, and the facility has was being built with this in mind. The layout of the training centre will allow academy players the opportunity to observe and interact with the senior playing staff.

“We put a lot of thought into the design of the training ground to ensure that it provided our first team with a top-flight training environment, as well as an open, collaborative and aspirational atmosphere for our young academy players,” added Eales.

Construction on the Franklin Gateway-based facility began in February and is expected to be finished in April 2017. The US$60m raised for the project has all come from private investment and the site will create 80 “high-paying” jobs.

Club owner Arthur Blank said he was “committed to building the best club in the MLS” and that the training ground proposal fitted in with those plans.

He added: “This facility will not only enable our players to develop at the highest level, it will provide an unparalleled, up-close experience for our fans and allow our club to make a significant impact in the community.”
