Frich's Wood Hotel debuts in world's tallest timber building

by Andrew Manns | 18 Mar 2019

Frich's Wood Hotel has officially launched inside the recently completed Mjøstarnet building in Brumunddal, Norway.

Featuring 72 rooms as well as an exterior garden, a restaurant, a pool, and a bar, the hotel is connected to a range of cycling and walking trails and faces Mjøs, Norway's largest lake.

Other elements of the complex include offices and residential facilities.

Frich's is part of the 85.4-metre-tall Mjøstarnet property – reportedly the tallest timber structure in the world – which was designed by Norwegian firm Voll Arkitekter for an estimated NOK 450m (US$52.5m, €46.3m, £39.8m).

Real estate company AB Invest developed and supervised the project, while Moelven supplied the high-rise's locally sourced lumber. HENT AS, meanwhile, served as the building contractor.

"Mjøstarnet is our first building where we really exploit the tree's properties to the fullest as construction material," commented the architects in a statement.

"We think it's exciting to see that wood construction has gained a new renaissance, considering recent experiences with the trees' environmentally friendly impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are proud to be able to help develop wood architecture to new heights."

Morten Kristiansen, CEO at Moelven Industrier, said: "We want to create a sustainable future using wood. Moelven is harvesting a renewable resource, and for every tree that is cut down, at least two new ones are planted.

"The Mjøstarnet project is yet another proof of what is possible to build with timber, and we hope that this building will inspire others to choose more sustainable and climate-friendly solutions in the years to come."
