Danish architects Adept win competition for new Berlin City Museum

by Luke Cloherty | 03 Dec 2018

A former union club for naval officers in Berlin is to be converted into a new city museum for the German capital.

Designed by architectural practice Adept, Stadtmuseum Berlin at 'Marinehaus' will be "a cultural pivot that anchors the museum in the neighbourhood through exhibitions, workshops and as a community centre for the locals", according to the architects.

Renderings show that the 7,800sq m (84,000sq ft) building's existing floors will be removed and replaced by a new interior wooden structure, creating an open space within the museum.

Its location will be part of a cluster of other cultural institutions in Mitte – a cultural zone in central Berlin.

The museum’s ground floor will be open to the public and will hold events, workshops, and a series of exhibitions. The upper floors, meanwhile, will be home to dedicated studio and workshop space.

Stadtmuseum Berlin director Paul Spies praised Adept’s winning design for its competition, calling it an "open and inviting contribution to public life in the city, embracing both everyday life and cultural communities".

An Adept statement added: "Our proposal embraces building an urban vision: a new flexible interior structure that creates spaces for cultural activities and the local community and, at the same time, a respectful reuse of the protected building."

Construction is due to begin in 2022 and the museum is currently expected to open in 2025.
